Fashion Books - The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior

Yesterday afternoon I took a walk around Malasaña and went into my favorite Madrid bookshop, Panta Rhei. They have the most beautiful books in this store and shelves full of books about fashion and design. There is no way of leaving the place without buying something. Yesterday's book was The Little Dictionary of Fashion by Christian Dior.

This is not a book to read in one sitting but to drink little by little, stop and read an article and come back in a while. Starting with the binding and the pages touch, it is a stylish book from the beginning to the end. It was first edited in 1954 but Christian Dior is still a well of wisdom regarding style. Let's read some of his best advice...

Accessories The less you can afford for your frocks, the more care you must take with your accessories. With one frock and different accessories you can always be well turned out.  Don't buy much but make sure that what you buy is good.

Black It is the most slimming of all colours, unless you had a bad complexion, it is one of the most flattering. You can wear black at any time. You can wear it at any age. You may wear it for almost any occasion. A 'little black frock' is essential to a woman's wardrobe.

Collars And never wear a white collar twice - it must be spotless.

Elegance I will only say now that elegance must be the right combination of distinction, naturalness, care and simplicity. Outside this, believe me, there is no elegance. Only pretension. Elegance is not dependent on money.

Emphasis If you have a particularly outstanding feature it is always a good thing to emphasise it. In fact the whole of fashion is emphasis - emphasis on women's loveliness.

Handbags You can wear the same suit from morning to dinner - but to be really perfectly dressed you cannot keep the same bag.

Individuality Until the time we are converted into robots - and I hope this time will never come - individuality will be always one of the conditions of real elegance. No elegant woman follows fashion slavishly. If a particular new line does not suit you, then ignore it.

Older Women I have said before that today there need be no old women. There are only women who are older than others. Nothing is prettier than grey hair.

Shoes It is by a woman's feet that you can judge whether a woman is elegant or not. In any case the important thing is that they should be comfortable. Uncomfortable shoes make you walk badly and then the most beautiful frock in the world will be badly displayed.

The Way You Walk Not so many years ago girls were taught to walk and I think it was quite right. A lot of women today should go back to school again and learn the art of walking well because it is extremely important.

Blogger Interview - Rachel from Cold Knees

I have reached to Rachel from Cold Knees for an interview because I really think you should take a thorough look at her style. The London-native started her blog almost two years ago and it keeps growing by the day. She has got a touch of sunshine which may have stolen from the time she lived in Seville.  Rachel has a definite style, mix of elegant dandy and romantic which I adore. See for yourself.

Where do you live? What is your area like?

I live in London, I don't want to disclose too much, but it's an area that's not particularly nice (think high street with drunks, pound shops and pot holes) although our street is ok :) But as is typical in much of London, you can go round a couple of corners and find something nice- a park, a coffee shop, something unexpected anyway!

In addition to blogging, you have a job? What do you do? Do you enjoy it?

I do have a job! I work for a national charity and mainly interact with people who support the charity- I deal with the financial side of things, as well as complaints sadly. Having a full time job can sometimes be hard to balance with blogging- I think I'd find it easier if I was still a student, although it would be a big distraction to studying!

How would you describe your style? What are you favorite clothes to dress in?

I would describe my style as changeable- today I'm wearing jeans and converse, tomorrow it might be a lace dress and boots... I like changing though, it keeps things interesting. I love wearing dresses, or skirts paired with an unusual blouse. Always a necklace too, and some rings. And lipstick!

Who are your style icons (dead and alive)?

I wouldn't say I have style icons as such. I do admire how some celebs have put together an outfit if I see it in a magazine, but wouldn't really consider any to be icons.

What blogs do you follow? What bloggers are style inspiration for you?

I follow a range of blogs- I love "big" ones like Wish Wish Wish and What Olivia Did... but I love lots of little ones too that don't have as many followers. I love blogs that look pretty as well and post things like songs, illustrations or a poem, not just fashion blogs. I get inspired by these sorts of things as well as outfit posts, or when a blogger puts together something pretty on Polyvore.

When you are not blogging, what do you like to do?

When I'm not blogging I like sitting on my sofa with a cup of tea. I love Mad Men and Game of Thrones so ideally I'd be watching that. Or out shopping, or travelling somewhere nice- I keep wanting to escape London!

What are you dreams and hopes for the future?

This is a tough one! I think I would always want to work in the creative industries, maybe still for a charity or NGO, but not necessarily in London, maybe Spain or somewhere else? Who knows. I'd want a few cute kids who could speak several languages too, and a hot husband of course!

If you could chose anyone to play you in a movie, who would it be?

My friend Tach- similar to me in many ways, but cooler.

How does London influence your style?

I think London does influence my style in a way, whenever I go shopping on Oxford Street I see lots of cool outfits, and I guess in general terms it does feel sort of inspiring to be living here. And I probably go shopping more than I would in a smaller town!

And to come to an end... why do you blog? What do you like most about it?
I started blogging after discovering a couple of cute blogs and wanting to do something similar. I just kept at it which is quite surprising. I like sharing things with other bloggers, and discovering things about them they want to share. Generally the community is nice, I've discovered some lovely people through blogging, which is probably the nicest thing. I love it when I see there's a new post up from one of my favs. I'm not sure for how long I'll be keeping it up we'll see- it can be quite time consuming..
